Currants

Image #1

Currants are dried, seedless grapes.  Currants are very small, tiny shrivelled, and intensely flavoured.

Dried currants are very similar to raisins, but they are smaller and have a more sour taste. They combine a mixture of very important vitamins and nutrients needed by the body, creating a very healthy food option. Currants are a good source of potassium, iron, fibre and vitamin B6, and eating them on a regular basis will help you meet the needs of your body.

They can be eaten raw, especially when ripe, when they are sweet to the taste. The grapes were originally cultivated in the south of Greece, and the name currant comes from the ancient city of 'Corinth'. They are often used in cooking, especially when baking scones, currant buns, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding and mincemeat.

They are sometimes sold mixed with raisins and sultanas as "mixed dried fruit".
